Here are some answers to questions you may have about online tuition.

What do I need for online Chemistry tution?

I use browser-based applications for tutoring Chemistry and Physics online, they are quick and painless to get going and no downloads are required. I use an online white board called Bitpaper and I also use a video chat called Whereby. I pay for these services so that there is no additional charge to my students. You will need some way of interacting with the whiteboard and also you must be able to connect to the two websites in your country through your normal connection or a VPN. For best results you will need:

  • Stable, high speed LAN internet or WiFi connection
  • Minimum 20Mbps download speed and 5Mbps upload speed (half these values just about works OK, but it isn’t great!)
  • A graphics tablet, a pen-based tablet (iPad Pro, Microsoft Surface), a touch screen computer, or a stylus and a normal tablet.
  • At least 8GB (ideally 16GB) of RAM.

Do you tutor International A-level and iGCSE Chemistry?

Yes, I have several students each year taking Edexcel International Chemistry and occasionally a few who study Cambridge International Chemistry and the IB. If you are currently outside the UK, please check that you can access the two websites I use mentioned in the FAQ above. I often have slots for students during the UK daytime so this is ideal for teaching students in countries that are ahead of GMT. Please check out my current availability or contact me using the email link in the sidebar for more information.

Do I need to take notes during the online sessions?

Not unless you wish to! Unlike what happens in sessions conducted face-to-face, the whiteboard records everything we do and is available after the tutorial. So you can review what we have covered, make notes on screen, or even print out questions to have another attempt at them offline. I usually send additional notes or material via email if necessary for both in-person and online tuition.

How do I book Chemistry tuition?

Most students have a regular slot at the same time each week. I can forward access to my booking calendar for students who are looking for adhoc sessions during the daytime, but please note that I expect most students to stick to a particular time if being tutored in the evening or on Saturday. Please check out my current availability or contact me using the email link in the sidebar for more information.

How do I pay for online Chemistry tuition?

Before each session by bank transfer or as a block payment for several sessions. If you are transferring money from abroad, I have a Revolut account and a PayPal account that can be used for acceepting payments. Paying in a foreign currency through Revolut is going to be far cheaper for you than using PayPal!
